Essential oils are becoming a big part of my beauty routine and are important for self care. Here are both some popular and some lesser known essential oils and how I have been using them in my everyday life.
Lavender Oil- My favorite oil and the most widely used. There are so many ways to sue this oil but my favorite is to put a few drops in the bath. It’s very moisturizing, soothing and calms the mind. I also use this oil when I mediate. I breathe the scent in a few times, and I am instantly calmer.
Peppermint Oil- Like lavender, this oil has so many uses! First, it’s great for sore muscles if used topically. My favorite way to use this oil is to use in the bathtub (only a few drops) and to then add Epsom Salts. It’s tremendously helpful and soothing after a long day or a strenuous workout. After researching, it may help reduce hunger cravings and act as a bug repellent.
Lemon Oil- Lemon is best known for it’s ability to cleanse toxins from any part of the body and is widely used to stimulate lymph drainage, to rejuvenate energy, purify skin and act as a bug repellent. Lemon oil can also be used to whiten teeth, face wash and a household cleaner. DIY face wash- You can mix lemon oil with baking soda and honey for a natural acne free face wash.
Rosemary Oil- We think of rosemary as an herb used in cooking- but it’s great for hair health as well. Put of few drops into Shampoo or Conditioner to promote hair growth. Francesca Fusco, a dermatologist notes a study that found this oil promoted hair growth.
Tea Tree Oil- I have early memories of using Tea Tree Oil to fight acne and acne scars. I found that it worked- but was not life changing. I have also used this as a deodorant! It makes for a great household cleaner since it kills bacteria and mold!
Frankincense Oil- This oil is new to me- but I’m glad I discovered it. There are many uses. First, this oil can improve oral health. Make your own toothpaste using this oil, baking soda and peppermint oil! The best discovery about this oil is that some say by smelling this oil- PMS cramps can be cured as well as PMS side effects- headaches, body pain etc. Like many essential oils, this oil also can help reduce stress by lowering the blood pressure and opening up the breathing passages.
